Bullying must end

In light of the April tragedy, the school and municipality are striving to understand what students learn in school. Unfortunately, hiring a speaker is not the answer.

Everything that expert Garbarino revealed has been within our reach for years and the only controllable element has long been known and ignored by the district and community.

Simply, ``bullying’’ must end! The administration, BOE, newspaper and law enforcementcan no longer accept ``bullying’’ as ``normal behavior’’ as is done at Columbine High.

In January 2007, a local paper printed my letter identifying specific acts of bullying perpetrated against students by two CCS teachers and an administrator. These acts were no less than physical harassment. However, not one law enforcement agent, school or community administrator, BOE member or local journalist (our watchdogs) sought to investigate those claims.

Instead, our students have been left to watch, learn and remain unprotected from their role models.

No wonder an honor student joked about the pain and embarrassment a teacher inflicted upon a fellow student or that other students mimic their role models with both physical and/or verbal attacks upon their peers.

Meanwhile, those who should be responsible pretend they don’t see.

This February, it came to my attention that a student, who had had his hair ripped from his scalp by a teacher in a class full of students, was ignored when he sought help from another teacher. Troubled that not a classmate or the informed teacher came to the young man’s defense, I personally wrote a BOE member of the incident on February 12, 2010.

Guess What? _ No reaction! In less than two months, Cooperstown would be shaken.

When will the next student be slammed against a wall or yanked from a chair by his hair?

When will the next shot ring out?
