EVENT: The Smithy Pioneer Gallery’s first art opening of the year, featuring three entirely new shows of photography, painting and sculpture.
An opening reception will be held at the gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. The gallery is located at 55 Pioneer Street in Cooperstown.
FILM: Otsego 2000 and The Farmers’ Museum will present a screening of ``Fresh,’’ the movie which provides new thinking about what we are eating, at The Farmers’ Museum’s Louis C. Jones Center at 6:30 p.m. The evening will also include a panel discussion exploring how to support local agriculture and our economy by buying regionally grown food.

PROGRAM: Ornithologist Dr. Valerie Freer will present ``Songbirds on the Move’’ at the Educational Meeting of the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society. Dr. Freer has conducted a 40-year study of songbirds beginning in 1970 and has banded over 19,000 birds. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Elm Park Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut Street, Oneonta, and refreshments will be served. WORKSHOP: The Master Gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension Otsego County will be holding a Hypertufa Stepping Stone Workshop from 10 a.m. to noon at Baker’s Beach, Rte. 28 South, Richfield Springs. Rain date will be Sunday, May 23. Participants will learn the technique of making hypertufa so they can go on to create garden pots and garden sculpture on their own. There is a $10 fee for this workshop and participants are asked to bring rubber gloves and a facemask. Pre-registration is required by May 14. SUNDAY, MAY 23
FUNDRAISER: Cooperstown Central School will be holding its annual spring festival and fundraiser in Kid Garden from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. Student-grown seedlings, pie pumpkin, cucumber, sun gold tomato, and lettuce plants, will be sold at the event.
Vendors will offer perennial plants and locally grown and or homemade items.
There will be information on sustainable living practices and local CSA farms. Kid Garden has grown to include a colonial herb garden thanks to the CCS fourth graders and the Farmer’s Museum, according to Kid Garden organizer Kristen Griger. She said together, they will grow traditional herbs to learn about their medicinal and culinary properties. We have included other points of interest in the garden space such as a teepee made from hops poles and a weather station, said Griger.
This, and more, will be on display during the spring festival event in Kid Garden, which is behind the Cooperstown Elementary School.
MONDAY, MAY 24
EVENT: Glimmerglass Opera Guild's next installment of the Talking Opera 2010 series will be at 7 p.m. in the Christ Church Parish Hall, 69 Fair Street, Cooperstown. A panel of four musicians from the Glimmerglass Opera orchestra will discuss how they approach the ``From Handel to Copland’’ season. Free to all. Refreshments served.

EVENT: Nom Nom Local Food Buying Club will be hosting a Clothes Swap from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Hartwick Community Center on Route 11 in the town of Hartwick. It is free and open to the public.
People are encouraged to clean out their closets and bring in un-needed women’s, men’s, children’s and baby clothing. Changing rooms & mirrors will be set up so clothing may tried on to check for the fit.
