Is it too much to ask?
Well over two years ago, Charlene and Jim Vrooman approached the Cooperstown Board of Trustees with an idea to beautify downtown Cooperstown by asking individuals/ store owners/groups to ``adopt’’ the plot of dirt around the trees on Main Street and Pioneer Street at the Main Street intersection.
The ``adoptors’’ would be responsible for planting, watering, weeding and keeping the areas neat and in good shape throughout the summer season. Each section was planted with perennial Hosta and Day Lily plants and were to be filled in with plants of the ``adoptors’’ choosing.
There were some regulations to be followed involving types and sizes of the plants.
The Trustees voted in favor of the idea and appointed the Vrooman’s Chairpersons of the ``Beautification Committee.’’
Each year since its inception in 2008, Rich McCaffery and I have faithfully tended to our assigned location around the tree in front of Wilber Bank on Main Street.
This required the expenditure ofáconsiderable money, time and energy. We were happy to do this and were proud of the results of our labors and expected to continue to do this each year.
It was most rewarding to be a part of this team spirit of volunteerism.
It was very disappointing to learn, on the street, that we had been relieved of our volunteer contributions to the Village by the Village Maintenance Committee. We were never notified of the planting day and only found out about it much later. If the focus of this year’s effort was to have selected volunteers only, than a simple notification that our services were no longer desired would have been appropriate...is that too much to ask?
It’s insensitive and divisive actions such as this that contribute to poor community morale. It’s not the end product that’s always important, but the process of involving village residents and merchants, in partnership, taking pride in projects that are mutually beneficial for all.
We’re sorry our efforts were no longer desired and would have appreciated advance notification that we were released of our involvement, as would other volunteers who were treated in this same manner.

Our Opinion: Bassett should know better
Last week, Bassett Healthcare tried to take over two of the village’s public parking lots for the exclusive use of its employees. The lots are on East Lake Road near the entrance to Fairy Springs Park, and Bassett put up signs that said the lots are for Bassett Healthcare staff parking only.

Our Opinion: Vote for Pohl
Cooperstown Central School graduate Phil Pohl is among 10 finalist in the Lowe’s Senior Class Award. First off congratulations, Phil. You have always shined on and off the baseball diamond. Pohl graduated at the top of his class and was a two-time Class C New York state Player-of-the-Year while at CCS.

Our Opinion: Town board made right decision
Last week, the Otsego town board voted to grant the village’s Gateway Project “limited zoning immunity.” The decision nullified a stop work order issued to the project earlier by Otsego Town Code Enforcement Officer Hank Schecher.

Enjoy area activities, attractions
With the rising gas prices many people are counting pennies just to keep food on the table, much less thinking about taking a family vacation.

Roses to the Cooperstown Concert Series for the completion of another entertaining season. The series has been providing live entertainment for the community during the fall and winter for 42 seasons. Each year the series brings that entertainment to Cooperstown through the efforts of the many volunteeers in the organization. Their efforts and the support of their patrons and sponsors adds a great deal to life in the village.

I am a candidate to continue with another term on the Cooperstown school board. My background is a graduate degree in technology education and professional experience in financial planning and management and regulatory compliance as director of a nonprofit community development corporation. I started on the Cooperstown board in 1996 and have seen much change in how New York manages public education in funding support, mandates, and expectations.
