Is it too much to ask?

Well over two years ago, Charlene and Jim Vrooman approached the Cooperstown Board of Trustees with an idea to beautify downtown Cooperstown by asking individuals/ store owners/groups to ``adopt’’ the plot of dirt around the trees on Main Street and Pioneer Street at the Main Street intersection.

The ``adoptors’’ would be responsible for planting, watering, weeding and keeping the areas neat and in good shape throughout the summer season. Each section was planted with perennial Hosta and Day Lily plants and were to be filled in with plants of the ``adoptors’’ choosing.

There were some regulations to be followed involving types and sizes of the plants.

The Trustees voted in favor of the idea and appointed the Vrooman’s Chairpersons of the ``Beautification Committee.’’

Each year since its inception in 2008, Rich McCaffery and I have faithfully tended to our assigned location around the tree in front of Wilber Bank on Main Street.

This required the expenditure ofáconsiderable money, time and energy. We were happy to do this and were proud of the results of our labors and expected to continue to do this each year.

It was most rewarding to be a part of this team spirit of volunteerism.

It was very disappointing to learn, on the street, that we had been relieved of our volunteer contributions to the Village by the Village Maintenance Committee. We were never notified of the planting day and only found out about it much later. If the focus of this year’s effort was to have selected volunteers only, than a simple notification that our services were no longer desired would have been appropriate...is that too much to ask?

It’s insensitive and divisive actions such as this that contribute to poor community morale. It’s not the end product that’s always important, but the process of involving village residents and merchants, in partnership, taking pride in projects that are mutually beneficial for all.

We’re sorry our efforts were no longer desired and would have appreciated advance notification that we were released of our involvement, as would other volunteers who were treated in this same manner.
