Our Opinion: Roses and Raspberries

— Roses to Cooperstown Central School graduate Molly Pearlman for putting off her college plans for a year to serve a 10-month term of service in the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program. She said her inspiration to participate in the program came from her father and brother.

“I am thankful for Joshua (her brother) doing it and for my dad for bringing back the idea (of community service). The experience has been absolutely amazing,” she said. Founded in 1994, AmeriCorps NCCC is a residential national service program that supports disaster relief, the environment, infrastructure improvement, energy conservation and urban and rural development.

We are glad the 2011 CCS graduate is finding fulfillment in helping others and agree that one does not need to be “filtered right into college” after high school. There are other options and life-changing experiences available.

Pearlman just finished her first service project in Boulder, Colo. She said her team worked with Open Space and Mountain Parks, an organization that preserves and protects the natural environment and land resources that characterize Boulder.

She was recently home for the holidays and shared her experiences. We wish Pearlman lots of luck as she heads to  her next destination and assignment to the southeast cornerof Arkansas in a small town called Eucdora. There, she and her fellow team members will be living in cabins and going to help out the teachers at the schools during the day and conducting their own classes in the afternoons.

Roses to the Milford Central School Cancer Awareness Club and the district for supporting MCS grad David Kerr and his family with his fight against cancer. David, a 2004 graduate, was diagnosed with soft-tissue sarcoma. After being hit with the scare, he and his family uprooted from North Carolina to come back to the community in which they grew up.

A special presentation of money raised through a “penny  war” was presented to the Kerr family during a holidayassembly at MCS. The school community raised a total of $2,725.25.

“When we came back, it was like we never left,” Christine, David’s wife and MCS 2002 grad, said. It is good to see so many come together and support a family in distress and to see the gratitude in return. “I’m really grateful; it means more to me than they would know,” he said. “They are all like family to me.”

After the check was presented, Kerr stood in front of an auditorium full of MCS staff and students and said he had goose bumps.

The family seems to remain in great spirits. Surgery is scheduled for early February.

Roses to the Cooperstown boys basketball team for winning its Dick White Holiday Tournament for the first time since 2005. The Redskins beat Cobleskill- Richmondville in the finals 64-47.
