Our Opinion: Looking forward

While many will spend the next few days reminiscing about 2011, we at the Crier are looking forward to next year.

We are ready to ring in a new year and look forward to the events to come. Of course there are those events that  happen annually such as the Cooperstown Winter Carnival,The Goodyear Polar Bear Jump, the Farmers’ Museum’s Junior Livestock Show, The National Baseball Hall of Fame’s Father’s Day Classic and Induction weekend, the Pumpkin Festival and Regatta and many more.

The Winter Carnival will be here before we know it. Planning has begun, and committee members have announced that festivities will take place Feb. 10 to 12. This will mark the 46th year of the popular event, which has taken on several theme in the past. This year’s theme is going to be “a Brazillian Carnivale with a taste of Mardi Gras thrown into the mix,” according to Committee Co-chair George Macaluso. The festivities generally attracts young and old, and usually full of new and old favorite activities. It was recently announced the reality show stars The Fabulous Beekman Boys will be on hand for a book signing. The Beekman Boys, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, will headline a full day of live music at Doubleday Field parking lot on Saturday according to a media release.

The Goodyear Polar Bear Jump will not be far behind. However, information is not yet posted on the event website, pbjump.com.

This event continues to grow each year. Even the bitter cold Mother Nature threw at us last year did not stop people from jumping into the icy-cold waters. Organizer Jamie Waters said jumpers really earned their sponsorship money, and we could not have agreed more. It had to be one of the most frigid, windy days of the event ever and even those who had jumped in years past said it was the coldest experience of all for them.

This year’s festivities will mark the 17th year of the popular event, which is a fundraiser that helps children, individuals and organizations in need.

If you have never witnessed the jump before, it is definitely something different to see. Even if you are not feeling up to taking the plunge, you can help through sponsorship or in other ways. People are also encouraged to come cheer on the participants.

For more information on the jump, call Brenda Waters at 286-7101.

Of course we are always looking for new things to cover as well. So if you have any news tips or events coming up let us know. We can be reached at 547-9493 or by email at crier@csdsl.net.
