With the rising gas prices many people are counting pennies just to keep food on the table, much less thinking about taking a family vacation.
It may not mean a family has to totally cut an outing together, however. There are many attractions locally that would save on gas. A lot of people overlook the local attractions in their communities whether they feel a need to get farther away from home or fail to recognize what is available right in front of their noses. Perhaps they have been there before, and don’t think there has been much of a change. The reasoning is not necessary important.
However, we do feel it may be worth one’s while to get out and about and support the local venues. You may be pleasantly surprised and able to save some cash. Just think,at least what is spent would be going back to the community in which you live.
The Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard will open Friday. The Farmers’ Museum and Fenimore Art Museum will open their doors to visitors a day early this year – Saturday, March 31 instead of an April 1. The National Baseball Hall of Fame is open seven days a week year round, but will officially begin the 2012 season on Thursday, April 5. The museum observes regular hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend. From Memorial Day through the day before Labor Day, the museum is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
On Saturday, the Hall of Fame will celebrate Family Day, which includes hands-on activities, crafts and demonstrations throughout the museum all day long, with children 12-and-under receiving free admission. Activities andentertainment will include baseball pennant-making craft stations; hands-on history stations throughout the museum; interactive demonstrations on the process of making baseball bats; the recreation of historic radio broadcasts and more, according to a media release. All events are included with museum admission. For more information, visit www.baseballhall.org.
While those are the obvious area attractions there are others that are plenty more, like taking a train ride. The Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad offers a lot of themed or holiday activities. One can hop on the bunny express withthe Easter Bunny and friends at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, March 31 and April 1, 7 and 8.
Our suggestion is to get the family together and drive around — or walk if you can. You may find something fun and interesting to do.

Change is never taken lightly
We are glad the Cooperstown Central School Board finally chose a nickname, but were surprised by the plummeting attendance rate at meetings pertaining to the matter. What seemed to be a hot-button issue attracting nearly 100 people for and against a name change at initial meetings seemed to simmer to complete no shows toward the end.

Tax cap is deceiving
As if figuring out one's tax bill isn't mind boggling enough. In its second year of implantation, the 2 percent limit on property tax increases makes things all that more complicated. One cannot just assume his or her individual taxes will not increase more than the cap threshold.
