VOORHEES, N.J. _ On Sept. 16, 2012, Harold Eldred Edson, 92, formerly of Milford Center, died peacefully at Virtua Hospital in Marlton, N.J., with his wife (of 70 years) and son by his side.
He was the beloved husband of Marjorie (Hotaling); the loving father of Gale Stucky (Larry), Jeffrey Edson (Jill Rivard), and the late Linda Potter; the devoted grandfather of Lauren Edson, Robert Snell (Jackie Snell), Richard Gorence (Paula) and Brian Gorence; the dear brother of Dotsey Fay, and deceased Harley Edson Sr.
A United States Merchant Marine veteran of the Merchant Marines during World War II (Dec. 7,1941 to Aug. 15, 1945), having served aboard ocean going ships in service. He did his Maritime Service Training in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.
Following the war, he returned home to the Dorr Edson Farm before purchasing Ford McLaurey’s general store. Mr. Edson owned/operated successfully Edson’s Market (IGA Store) for 25 years in Portlandville, and served as that town’s postmaster and received the Service Award for his dedicated service and honorable career of 18 years as Postmaster by the U.S. Post Office in 1985.
He was an active member of the International Rotary Club in Milford, for over 50 years, for which he received a Presidential Citation from Ronald Reagan.
He was past president of Portlandville United Methodist Church for several years and also served as president of the Milford Center Cemetery Association.
He was past president of Greater Milford Historical Association.
Some of Harold’s most precious moments in life that he liked to talk about included shaking Babe Ruth’s hand during the first Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cooperstown, at age 17, starting the Greater Milford Recreation Program and watching his son play All Star Little League on the fields he helped build, and later in life watching his daughter (Linda) carry the Olympic Torch (Relay) in 2004, for extraordinary willpower and positive attitude for the fight against cancer, and in his final years being able to spend quality time with family, and most recently with his daughter (Gale) who had an extended stay in South Jersey from Florida.
His lifelong dedication, commitment, and love to his family, friends and all who knew him will long be remembered and cherished.
Interment services will be held in the Milford Center Cemetery beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, officiated by Pastor Moore of the United Methodist Church.
