COOPERSTOWN _ Anthony George Martucci, a kind, loving and gentle family man, died early Saturday morning, Feb. 18, 2012, at hishome in the Town of Middlefield. The loving husband of Josephine Martucci, he was 85.
A native of Staten Island, Anthony was born Aug. 19, 1926, and raised in Rosebank, a son of Anthony and Catherine (Mangino) Martucci. Not yet 18 and just graduated from New Dorp High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy and entered into active duty Oct. 23, 1944. He proudly served his country during World War II and saw duty in the Philippines. He mustered-out Aug. 9, 1946, and then served in the United States Navy Reserves.
On March 31, 1951, Anthony married Josephine Rosalie Ciaburri in a ceremony at St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church on Staten Island. The couple settled in Midland Beach where they lived and worked and raised their family.
After returning from the Navy, Tony, as he was known by his friends, worked for the former Richmond Gas in Rosebank, and later for The Brooklyn Union Gas Company in Grasmere. After 30 years, he retired as a Customer Service Supervisor. He then drove a bus for special-needs students for six years for G & R Bus Co.
Always the consummate handyman, he did odd jobs for many neighbors, friends and family members. In September of 1993, the Martuccis moved to Cooperstown and settled into their new home on Fred Ottaway Road in the Town of Middlefield. While on the Island, Anthony was a parishioner at St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church, and for 47 years was a member of the Knights of Columbus Manresa Council No. 2147 in New Dorp Beach.
Since moving to upstate New York, Anthony was a member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown and the Milford American Legion Post No. 1566. He will be remembered by his family and friends as an ardent fan of the New York Yankees, for his love of puzzles, and a person who always loved being with his family.
Anthony was preceded in death by two sons, Anthony Martucci, who died Dec. 17, 2005, and Joseph Martucci, who died Sept. 17, 2009.
He was also predeceased by three brothers, Salvatore Martucci, Frank Martucci and Joseph Martucci; and three sisters, Christina Bove, Victoria Grasso and Rosie Errichello.
