Ruth Mildred Waide Graham passed away on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at the age of 96.
Ruth Mildred Waide was born Nov. 6, 1914, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Mabel Madora Holden and John Calvin Waide. Ruth’s maternal grandparents were Lymanetta Creamer and John Holden, and her paternal grandparents were Catherine Thompson and John Washington Waid. Ruth is descended from early Pennsylvania and Shenandoah Valley, Virginia settlers: to include the Krick (Crick) and Cale (Kailes) families.
Ruth had three brothers, John and James Waide, who predeceased her, and Charles Waide (wife Peggy), who survives.
Ruth attended PS 170 in Bay Ridge and later Bay Ridge High School for young women, where she excelled academically. Ruth placed first in the NYC Biology exam. She was a member of Theo Phi Delta sorority, and the friendships she made lasted throughout her lifetime.
Following graduation, Ruth worked as a legal secretary.
On July 6, 1935, Ruth married Robert Wesley Graham at Bay Ridge Methodist Church. Ruth and Wesley had eight children, Robert W. Graham Jr. and wife, Ingrid, Dorothy Ruth Brining and husband, Robert, Kenneth Waide Graham and wife, Lois, Dianne Ellen Feury and husband, Theodore P. Jr., Glenn William Graham and wife, Maryanne, Linda Virginia Smirk and husband, John, Janet Isabel Faure and husband, Patrick, and James Bradley (J.B.), and wife, Mary Jean.
Ruth and Wesley lived in Brooklyn, where Ruth devoted her life to educating and caring for her family, and where Wesley served as a lieutenant in the NYC Fire Department. Following Wesley’s retirement in 1964, they relocated to Cooperstown.
Ruth and Wesley were active in the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown, Middlefield Historical Association, as well as many other community activities. True to her English roots, Ruth enjoyed gardening and was a long-standing member of the Cooperstown Garden Club and the Women’s Club of Cooperstown. Ruth served in the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Cooperstown Fire Department.
Ruth and Wesley joyously embraced friends and family and opened their home to all.
Ruth and Wesley are the grandparents of 22 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. Ruth is the sister-inlaw of Audrey Graham; and an aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Ruth and Wesley’s strong devotion to each other was, and will always be an inspiration to all who knew them.
As much as Ruth loved her children, her one true love was, and is eternally, Wesley, with whom she shared 69 years of marriage.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown. Burial followed in the Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Capital Fund of the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown.
