COOPERSTOWN — David Matthew Hribar, a native of the Cooperstown and Fly Creek areas, passed away following a long illness, early Friday morning, April 6, 2012, at his home in Fork Shop. He was 81.
Born Jan. 6, 1931, at the family homestead in Fly Creek Valley, he was the son of Anton J. and Anna Belle (Pope) Hribar. In his youth he attended a one-room schoolhouse in Taylortown and later went to school in Richfield Springs .
In April 1948, Dave enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served as a gunner’s mate aboard the USS Albany during the Korean War. In April 1952, Dave received his honorable discharge from the military.
On Oct. 28, 1952, Dave married Elizabeth Bachanas in a ceremony at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Dave and Betty then moved to Ilion, where Dave worked at Remington Arms assembling fire arms.
Following a layoff in 1955, Dave and Betty returned to the Cooperstown area and settled into their home in Fork Shop in June of that year. In the ensuing years, Dave worked in St. Mary’s Cemetery, both on Irish Hill and Index, as well as for Western Auto and the Leatherstocking Golf Course. For many years he was also associated with Rod’s TV and Appliance where he served as a repairman.
Dave is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty, of Fork Shop; their five children, David M. Hribar Jr. of Palmer, Alaska, Diane M. Hribar of Fork Shop, Terri Smith and her husband, Victor, of Pierstown, Keith Hribar and his friend, Kim Stahl, who reside on the old family homestead and farm in Fly Creek Valley, and Melissa Madaras and her husband, Andy, of Richfield Springs; nine grandchildren, Heather, Jason, Cady and Rebecca Smith, Kody and Kimberly Hribar, Jamie Madaras and Kenneth and Wade Stahl; five great-grandchildren, Emily, Hannah, Bo and Arro Bancroft and Amelia Stokes.
Dave is also survived by one sister, Carolyn Hopper of Richfield Springs; two brothers, Walter J. Hribar andhis wife, Polly, of Richfield Springs and Dean A. Hribar and his wife Barb of Schuyler Lake and many nieces and nephews.
Dave was predeceased by one grandson, Matthew Hribar who died Feb. 11, 1994.
A graveside service will be offered 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2012 at the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery in Fly Creek with the Rev. Betsy Jay, chaplain at Bassett Medical Center, officiating.
Military honors will be accorded by members of the Cooperstown Veterans Club and a contingent from the United States Navy Funeral Honor Guard.
