ONEIDA – George R. Winne Sr., 95, of Hill Road, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, in St. Luke’s Hospital, New Hartford, following a brief illness. Born in Cooperstown on Dec. 14, 1915, he was the son of Floyd W. and Katherine Tiffany Winne Sr. A resident of this area since 1950, Mr. Winne was educated in the Cooperstown schools.
He first attended Carroll University. George received his bachelor’s degree from Hartwick College and his master’s degree from Albany State College and received his certification in secondary administration from Colgate University.
He married Doris Davis in Cooperstown on Sept. 15, 1944.
Prior to his retirement in 1978, Mr. Winne was the director of the guidance department for over 38 years with the Oneida City Schools.
Mr. Winne was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, sang in the choir and was a Sunday school teacher.
He was a member of the Oneida Teachers Association, the Madison County Guidance Association, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Sconondoa Fire Department for over 40 years where he also served as the treasurer, a member of the Verona Zoning Board of Appeals for over 30 years, president of the Mohawk Valley Travel Trailer Club, and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 138 in Cooperstown.
While residing in Cooperstown, he was licensed by Bishop Oldham as lay reader of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany and was a member of the vestry of Christ Episcopal Church.
George was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre.
To George, his wife and his children and their families were dear to his heart and the times spent with them were the most precious.
Surviving are his wife, Doris; one son and daughter-in-law, George R. and Denise Winne Jr. of Oneida; three daughters and sons-inlaw, Cheryl and Garth Brinkand Deborah and Thomas Stanhope, all of Oneida, and Patricia and Thomas Dorato Jr., of Guilderland; 10 grandchildren, Jaime Alvarez, Megan Shene, Kelly Moran, Kerry Kincaid, Michael Bell, Julie Kirk, Jennifer Stone, Jessica Burns, Thomas J. Dorato, and Nicholas Dorato; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Monday from St. John’s Episcopal Church, Oneida, where the Requiem Eucharistic was offered by, with the Rev. James Heidt, Rector. Interment was in Springfield Center Cemetery at 2 p.m. Monday.
Friends called at the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
