It may have been unseasonably warm outside, but for Cherry Valley- Springfield’s girls, it was a cold night in Milford on Friday.
The Patriots went on long stretches without making baskets and the Wildcats took advantage for a 55-31 victory.
“It was a bad night all around,” CV-S coach Tim Dubben said. “Bad refing, bad shooting, bad everything.” Avalon Ward scored 17 points to lead Milford and Addy Lawson added 15 points. Both players missed the Wildcats’ first game with the Patriots, which CV-S won.
“That makes a big difference,” said Milford coach Jim Weir, who got his 299th victory with the win. “We didn’t have them in the first game, not just Ward, but No. 24, Lawson. We’re playing much better with them back in the lineup.”
CV-S took a 5-0 lead with 2:30 gone in the first quarter on a basketby Lauren Loucks. However, the Patriots didn’t score again for four minutes while the Wildcats scored the next 12 points, and closed the quarter leading 14-7.
CV-S scored the first two baskets to open the second quarter and cut the lead to 14-11 on Aria Dubben’s basket, but then couldn’t score the rest of the half, nearly seven minutes without a point. Milford scored eight straight points and led 21-11 at halftime.
The pattern stayed the same in the second half. The Patriots got a couple of free throws to start the third quarter, but the Wildcats went on a 13-6 run to close the quarter, again holding CV-S without a field goal for more than four minutes, and led by 17 points, 36-19 after three quarters. Aria Dubben had 13 points to lead CV-S (9-6). Milford (7-5, 6-5) got nine rebounds and five assists from Ward while Lawson had seven steals. Michelle Paffenroth added eight points for the Wildcats.
It was senior night for Milford, who honored five departing players Ward, Paffenroth, Krista Krol, Kinga Kowalczyk and Jocelyn Bennett. Both teams have qualified for the Section Four Class D tournament, according to their coaches, and are now playing for better seeding.
Milford defeated Richfield Springs 49-31 on Tuesday night as Weir earned his 300th game victory as a coach. MCS closes the regular season on Friday at Worcester. CV-S closes out the regular season at Schenevus on Friday. The MCS boys beat CV-S on the road.
Will Ward hit four three-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points to lead visiting Milford in the Tri-Valley League.
Up by one after the first quarter, the Wildcats outscored CV-S, 22-5, in the second quarter. Milford hit four three-pointers in that quarter, one apiece from Ward, Paul VanWarner, Brian Thorn and Peyton Griffiths. Corey Atwell had 11 points for the Wildcats.
CV-S’ Isiah Montgomery and Kyle Jaquay scored 14 apiece, and Collin Lamouret contributed 13.
