Two Milford coaches, who
have both won Section Four
Class D soccer titles, were
inducted into the Tri-Valley
Athletic Association Coaches
Hall of Fame last Saturday in
between the Tri-Valley Championship
Games at Oneonta
State.
Frank Spurchise, who is still
an active coach at Milford in
both boys soccer and basketball,
and Lorin Campbell, who
retired last year after 15 successful
seasons with the girls
soccer team, were among the
seven coaches honored.
Spurchise is in his 32nd year
with the boys soccer team,
and won a Section Four Class
D title in 1984. He has also
won numerous Tri-Valley division
and overall championships
while at Milford.
In 2006, when he won his
300th career game, Spurchise
said his only regreat was
that he couldn’t do it all over
again.
``If I could do it all over
again I would,’’ said Spurchise,
who retired from teaching at
Milford in 2006.
In that ‘84 season, Milford
advanced all the way to the
state Final Four before losing.
That feat was tied by the
Campbell and the Milford girls
soccer team in 2006.
The Wildcats defeated
Davenport for the Class D title
that season as Campbell’s
youngest daughter, Brenna,
scored the only goal in a 1-0
win. They went on to lose in
the Final Four to eventual
state champion McGraw and
finished with a 19-2-1 record
that season.
``It was a long time coming
and to have Brenna score the
goal in the section finals is
something we’ll remember
forever,’’ Lorin Campbell said
recently. ``It does make it a
little more special that it was
her, it’s a wonderful feeling.’’
Campbell coached three of
his daughters at Milford, while
Spurchise coached both of his
sons.
Campbell’s youngest
daughter, Brenna, was recently
named an All-American
after her second season at
Broome County Community
College.
In Campbell’s 15 seasons,
his teams won seven Tri-Valley
championships and 10
division titles in addition to
the section title and Final Four
appearance.
Campbell contunues to
serve as the school’s athletic
director.
Other inductees in the 2010
class include Edmeston’s Les
Bush and Craig Cole, Gilbertsville-
Mt. Upton’s Jim Johnson,
Worcester’s Jim Kenyon and
Laurens’ Dave Miller.
