Niekro, Ozzie to return for Hall of Fame Classic

STAFF REPORT

The Knucksies and Wizards will go at it again this June in Cooperstown. The Baseball Hall of Fame announced Monday that Hall of Famers Phil Niekro and Ozzie Smith will return as team captains for the fourth annual Hall of Fame Classic at Doubleday Field.

The seven-inning exhibition featuring former bigleague players is the highlight to Hall of Fame Classic Weekend, which will run June 15-17.

This year’s game will be played on the eve of Father’s Day June 16. The first three years, the exhibition was played on Father’s Day.

“We listened to fans about their ability to attend the game on Father’s Day and we believe that a switch to Saturday enables a larger potential pool of families to experience this wonderful Cooperstown tradition,” Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said in a media release. “We look forward to welcoming fans back and greeting new ones as well.”

Tickets for the Classic will go on sale April 14. They can be purchased at the museum, online at baseballhall.org or by calling 1(866) 849-7770, beginning at 9 a.m. First- and third-base seats are $12.50 and outfield tickets cost $11.

Last June, 5,687 fans attended the Knucksies’ 8-6 victory over the Wizards. The first two Classics drew better than 7,000 to Doubleday Field, which seats close to 10,000. The Classic will be preceded by the Cooperstown Game Day Parade, which begins at noon June 16. Players will ride in the parade on the way to Doubleday Field. A hitting contest will begin at 1 p.m. and the exhibition starts at 2 p.m.

At 7 p.m. June 16, the Hall of Fame members in attendance will be featured in a roundtable discussion of baseball at Doubleday Field in a one-hour reflection on their memories of the game. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and seating is limited. For more information, call 547-0397.

The third annual Cooperstown Golf Classic on June 17 will feature several Hall of Famers and serve as a fundraiser forthe Hall of Fame’s educational programs.

Golfers of any ability will enjoy a private cocktail reception in the Hall of Fame plaque gallery, breakfast at Leatherstocking Golf Course, a round of golf in a scramble format at Leatherstocking, and conclude with a luncheon and awards ceremony, all in the company of the Hall of Famers. Space is limited to 24 participants. For information, call 547-0310.

From 4-7 p.m. June 15, the museum will host the Legends for Youth Skills Clinic for kids ages 7-12. The Clinic gives youth participants a chance to learn hands-on training from several former major league stars. The event concludes with an autograph session for participants.

Registration is free, but limited. For information, call 547-0397.
