CV-S tops Downsville in sectional play

THE DAILY STAR

Scott Stiles threw a two-hitter and five second-inning singles helped Cherry Valley-Springfield to five runs in its Section Four Class D victory over visiting Downsville. The eighth-seeded Patriots (13-4) were scheduled to play No. 1 Hancock (15-3) Wednesday in a Class D quarterfinal. Scores were not available by deadline.

Stiles (4-0) struck out 10 and walked six against Downsville. “His curveball had a lot of bite tonight,” Dubben said of Stiles. “It might have gotten him in trouble with the walks. People came up to me after the game saying they just couldn’t believe a ball could move that much.”

Adams, Spencer Supak and Chad Thompson led off CV-S’ second inning with singles off of losing pitcher Josh Ahearn. Thompson’s single scored Adams and Supak to make it 2-0. Stiles and Alec Denniger also had runscoring singles in the inning.

After five Stiles walks helped Downsville to three runs in the third, Adams led off the third inning with a double off the fence in center and scored on a single by Thompson to make it 6-3.

Adams finished 3-for-3 with three runs and Thompson went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Denniger contributed two hits for CV-S, which has won 12 of its last 13 games, including a 11-3 victory over Edmeston in Friday’s Tri- Valley League final.

Ninth-seeded Downsville finishes the season at 7-5.
