Cross country teams finish two meets

-- — Cooperstown’s cross country teams opened the season under hot sunny skies at Kirkland Town Park.

Clinton hosted the meet, which also included Remsen, Mount Markham and Sherburne-Earlville (S-E). Coach Jessie Ravage said she felt the Cooperstown athletes ran well on the rolling turf and trail two-loop 5K course that incorporates a wooded section running along a creek.

“The entire course was in very good condition due to the droughty weather over the past few months, and individual times for those who raced there last year, when it was soft and muddy, were mostly quite a lot faster,” Ravage wrote in an email.

Both Cooperstown’s varsity teams scored four wins in dual meet scoring. The matchup with S-E scored each team two points towards divisional standing. The girls, by virtue of racing complete teams of five runners, scored wins against Clinton (24-inc), Remsen (34-inc) and S-E (15-inc). The girls beat Mount Markham 18-39. The boys outran Clinton in a close matchup (26-29), as well as Mount Markham (20-35), S-E (17-42) and Remsen (16-inc).

Remsen’s MaKenna Cooley led the girls race with a time of 19:53. Cooperstown’s first girl, Samantha Fanion, was fifth overall with a time of 21:23. Francesca LoRusso finished ninth (22:55). Sophomore and new member of the team, Rebecca Odell led a trio of herself, Jaime Zoltick and Kate O’Handley who finished 10th (23:20), 11th (23:30) and 12th (23:43). Senior and captain Sara Breiten was Cooperstown’s sixth runner in 15th place overall with a time 24:50. Maddy Sandler, a second-year junior was 23rd (30:43) followed by freshman Sylvia Johnson (24th, 32:48) and senior Katie Booan (25th, 32:51).

Clinton’s Jack Yaworsky clocked 16:32 to lead the boys race. Junior and new member of the team Jacob Lansing in third place overall (18:35) was Cooperstown’s first runner. Senior and captain Jake Burnham was close behind in fourth place (18:42). Junior Nick Fanion finished in sixth (19:01) followed by Mikey Boyle in eighth (19:02). Sophomore Jacob Russell, who has returned after a year off, rounded out Cooperstown’s scoring five in 13th, clocking 19:50. Aidan Macaluso, a senior new to cross country was 23rd (21:52) followed by Max Ofer (25th, 22:04) and freshman Connor Fay (29th, 22:53). New runner and junior Pat Wilson finished 33rd (24:33) followed by freshman Alex Greenberg in 35th (24:48). Frosh Ken Roberts and Hunter Ducey rounded out the team in 36th (25:36) and 40th (26:29).

Cooperstown eighth-grader Samantha Fanion placed 64th out of 628 girls at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill on Saturday. She finished the 3.1-mile course in 21:51.

The second eighth-grade girl overall, Fanion helped the Redskins to finish 25th out of 55 teams in the merged standings, which featured teams from classes A-D.

Jake Burnham paced Cooperstown’s boys with a time of 19:24, good for 170th out of 879 finishers.

Ravage said the meet was a good preview of the course that will be used in all-section competition in November.

“The course is more difficult than the one at Clinton, where the teams raced three days earlier,” she wrote.

The teams participated in a meet at Herkimer on Wednesday, but results were not available before deadline.
