Holli Erkson scored a game-high 13 points and Nicole Cring had eight blocks and 12 rebounds as Cooperstown stayed undefeated in the Center State Conference with a 44-29 victory over visiting Sauquoit Valley at Bursey Gymnasium on Tuesday. The Redskins (9-1, 5-0) had early foul trouble and problems on offense in the game. Fortunately for them, they had no problems on defense.

“I was just telling the girls, I’m not sure what it is about Sauquoit,” coach Mike Niles said. “They have good athletes; they have a great soccer program. It just seems like every time we play them they give us trouble. It was like we were expecting them to give us trouble.”

“Now defensively, I thought we did really well. When they have 29 on the scoreboard, that’s a good effort for us,” he added. The Indians committed 11 turnovers in the first quarter and had trouble with Cooperstown’s press.

Alexis Bloomfield scored five of the Redskins’ first six points for a 6-0 lead. When Bloomfield picked up her second foul and went to the bench halfway though the quarter, the tempo changed. Sauquoit scored six straight to tie the game, before Erkson  hit a three-point shot to giveCooperstown a 9-6 lead after one quarter.

Cooperstown started the second quarter with another big run, scoring the first seven points of the quarter and leading 16-6 on Sumer Murdock’s three-point basket at 6:23.

Cring, the Redskin center, had five of her blocks and seven of her rebounds in the first half, but she too picked up her second foul and sat down midway through the second quarter.

The Indians responded with eight straight points and trailed 16-14 after Jenna Mazza’s fast break lay-up with 3:12 left in the half, but the team faded from there. Murdock hit another three pointer and Meghan Vann added two free throws to give Cooperstown a 21-16 halftime lead.

The Redskins broke the game open in the third quarter with 14 points as all five starters scored in the quarter for a 35-24 lead. The Indians looked fatigued in the fourth quarter and the Redskins expanded their margin to as many as 16 points before winning by 15.

The Indians might have stayed in the game had they been able to make free throws. The team missed 15 of 20 foul shots.

In addition to Erkson’s 13 points, the Redskins got nine from Bloomfield and eight  from Murdock.Jessica Jecko led Sauquoit (4-6, 3-2) with seven points. Cring had just three points for the Redskins, but Niles said her defensive presence was a game changer.

Niles said, “Nic, that’s what she does. She is leading Center State in blocks.”

Tonight will put her up over six per game. She has been real tough for other teams to go inside on.

“Thursday (tonight), that will be the test for her, We play (at) Little Falls and they have Jenna Becker at center. That will be two good centers playing one another. It will be interesting to see how it goes,” Niles said.

The Redskins also won the junior varsity game, beating the Indians 40-37. Cooperstown’s JV girls are 9-1 on the season.
