Despite having flu-like symptoms
all week, Cooperstown senior
Caleb Edmonds was able to
win the Section Three Class D
cross country title at Jamesville
County State Park last Saturday.
Edmonds advanced to this
Saturday’s state meet at Plattsburgh
State and is seeded first
among all Class D runners.
``Caleb ran a very intelligent
race on Saturday,’’ said Cooperstown
cross country coach Jessie
Ravage. ``He could have just done
enough to qualify for states, but
he was determined to win. He did
enough to win but he didn’t push
it any further.’’
Edmonds’ time was 16 minutes,
53.9 seconds, defeating runner-
up Matt Cheney of Beaver
River by six seconds and helping
the Redskins to a second place
finish in Class D. Beaver River
won with 38 points while Cooperstown
had 84.
Edmonds said he felt about 60-
70 percent healthy last Saturday,
but is hoping to be 100 percent for
the state meet.
``I feel much better and my
goal is to win,’’ Edmonds said
Tuesday evening.
Edmonds’ biggest competition
for the state title on Saturday
will likely come from Seton Catholic’s
Mike Champagne, who is
seeded second overall in Class D.
``My strategy will be to stay
even with him and maybe get a
lead early and not let him outkick
me at the end,’’ Edmonds
said. ``I don’t know the course so I
don’t have a time in mind, but it
should be better than last week’s
time.’’
Edmonds’ older brother, Josh,
finished second at the state meet
when he was a senior.
``Caleb is a little worried about
getting out-kicked at the end,’’
Ravage said. ``But I think he’s got
the foot speed to pull it off.’’
Ben Resnick finished ninth for
Cooperstown in 18:14.8, missing
a berth in the state meet by one
place and two seconds.
``I felt bad for Ben because he
did everything right,’’ Ravage
said. ``He got out-kicked by a Sauquoit
runner at the line.’’
Ravage said the Cooperstown
girls team finished on a high note,
with senior captain Sarah Fanion
the first CCS runner across the
line, followed by eighth grader
Jaime Zoltick for the sixth place
Redskins.
Zoltick is only an eighth grader
and the first runner to be selectively
classified by Ravage.
Another senior, Lauren Harris,
was the third Cooperstown
runner across the line.
``Our top three were within 12
seconds of each other,’’ Ravage
said.
The top 10 seeds in the Class
