Youth baseball to raise money for Warriors

STAFF REPORT

The Cooperstown Youth Baseball 12U All-Stars will host the VFW Post 805 “Flying Tigers” 12U baseball team from O’Fallon, Ill., in two exhibition baseball games on June 15 and 16 at Beaver Valley Campground.

The boys will raise money to help support the Wounded Warrior Project and the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team by selling American Flag lapel pins for $2 at the games.

The Wounded Warrior Project is an organization dedicated to helping raise awareness and enlisting the public’s aid for injured members of the armed forces while providing unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.

The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team’s mission is to raise awareness, through exhibition and celebrity softball games, of the sacrifices and resilience of our military, and highlight their ability to rise above any challenge.

Their goal is to show other amputees and the general population that these athletes through extensive rehabilitation and training are able to express their desires and perform the sport they love. Games will begin at 6 p.m. People are asked to bring a lawn chair.

According to Cooperstown Youth Baseball vice president, treasurer and secretary Michelle Dibble, the Illinois team approached the Cooperstown team in the fall.

“They travel all around the world doing this (raising money for the Warriors),” Dibble said. “We did not have a field, so we were not sure we could do it.”

Dibble said once the owners of the Beaver Valley Campground offered to let them use their facilities, the decision was a no-brainer. Local veterans will throw out the first pitch each day, according to Dibble.

The goal is to get community members out to support this tournament, Dibble said.
