Davine, king of Cooperstown assists

STAFF REPORT

If you need help, try calling Jay Davine. Senior point guard Davine broke Cooperstown’s all-time assists record last Thursday and scored 13 points to lead the Redskins to a 71-43 boys basketball thumping of visiting Westmoreland in a Center State Conference Division III game.

“He brings a lot of energy and he handles the ball really well,” Cooperstown coach Dave Bertram said  of third-year varsity playerDavine, the CSC D-II MVP last season. “When people try to press us, it’s hard for them because he handles the ball really well and gets us out of sticky situations. He steals the ball quite often from opposing point guards, too, and that’s where he gets most of his points.”

Although Bertram didn’t have assist totals from Thursday’s game, he said Davine broke the program record of 237 in the first quarter. Otsego County Judge John Lambert, who is Cooperstown’s junior varsity coach, amassed 237 assists from 1984-87. Lambert also shares the single-game program record for assists with Davine at 11. Bertram did not respond to an email from the Crier to get an update on Davine’s total assists.

Bertram said Davine has had 11 assists twice this season. Asked if Davine did it again Thursday, Bertram said, “Probably not. He was too busy scoring.”

Jeremiah Ford scored a game-high 17 points for the state-ranked Redskins (10-1, 5-0), who received 16 from Michael Moakler.

Cooperstown held a 16- 11 lead after one quarter before pulling away with a 19-5 second period that included nine points from Davine. Ford had nine points and Moakler contributed eight in the third quarter, when the Redskins outscored Westmoreland, 27-16.

“We had a slow start,” Bertram said. “Our offense wasn’t really clicking, but we started getting more aggressive defensively and it turned into a lot of layups and easy baskets for us. The intensity level picked up and we scored quite a bit right off the bat.” Tyler Witter’s 15 points paced Westmoreland, which received 12 from John Gerace.
