-- —
Just a minute into the game Saturday, things looked bad for Cooperstown football against No. 19 ranked Dolgeville, and it only got worse as the non-division game went on and the Blue Devils won 49-2.
After Devin Bullock’s 82-yard opening kickoff return made it 7-0, Cooperstown’s Noah Sims threw an interception on the Redskins’ first possession. A play later, Austin LaVeck’s scored on a 32-yard run.
Although the extra point failed, Dolgeville led 13-0 just a minute into the game.
“Getting down 13 points with less then a minute into the game is hard to come back from let alone against the 19th ranked team in the state,” Cooperstown coach Mark Segina said. “My biggest challenge was and is not letting the kids get down on themselves.”
“Sometimes games just break this way,” he continued. “It isn’t something that is enjoyable, but it happens. Now we have to pick ourselves up and get ready for the next game.”
Another interception on the next Redskin possession led to another LaVeck touchdown, this time on a one-yard run. Reid Johnson passed to Jimmy Doolittle for the two-point conversion and it was 21-0 with just a little more than five minutes gone in the game.
The Blue Devils scored twice more in the second quarter, on a 45-yard pass from Johnson to Tyler Richards and on a 75-yard run by Devin Coonradt, making the halftime score 35-0.
Andrew Drumm and Greg Pelan scored on touchdown runs in the second half for the 49 points.
Cooperstown got its lone score on a safety when Kevin Segit tackled LaVeck in the end zone. That play was set up when Cooperstown failed to convert a first and goal, turning the ball over on downs at the Dolgeville one-yard line.
As if Dolgeville wasn’t enough, the Redskins also had injuries to deal with. Jacob Miller went out on the first play of the game, Sims rolled his right ankle and left in the second quarter and Ben Carentz hurt his right arm in the second half.
Segina said he hopes the players will be able to play Friday at Mohawk.
“We will see how it goes,” he said, “talk to them, find out how they feel and see where we go from there. I am hopeful that they will be able to play this Friday but we have to wait and see.”
Segina said he did find some positives in the game, especially on defense. The Redskins forced three turnovers and several players made big tackles including Segit, T.J. Fay, E.J. Perez, John Brown, Max Bonderhoff and Joe Harmon.
“Our defense, with two starters out, was still competitive even though we did allow some big plays. It is hard to be on defense that long let alone with a physical team such as Dolgeville,” he said.
Cooperstown (1-2, 1-1) will play division rival Mohawk (0-2, 0-1) on Friday on the road.
“Mohawk is looking for their first win and they played both Dolgeville and West Canada tough so we will have our hands full this week,” Segina said. “That is what I told the kids, get over this one, ice your hurts and come Monday we get back to work preparing for Mohawk. It is what I love about football, you move on, win or lose, you have to move on and get ready for the next week.”
