Lady Redskins get non-league win

Nicole Cring had 12 points, eight blocks and seven rebounds as the Cooperstown- High girls basketball team took an early lead and beat visiting New York Mills 55-44 on Tuesday in a non-league game.

The Redskins defense dominated the Marauders, especially in the first half, forcing 13 turnovers and holding them to long stretches without a basket.

“They’re a very well coached team,” Cooperstown coach Mike Niles said. ”(Andrea Driekan) does a great job with them. They came out running some things that I knew right away would be a challenge for us, but we responded very well.”

New York Mills scored the first point of the game, on a free throw by Ashley Nichols 41 seconds into the game, but did not score again for four minutes. The Redskins took a 12-3 lead on Meghan Vann’s two free throws and led 14-5 after the first quarter. Alexis Bloomfield had five points, three rebounds and a steal in the quarter to lead Cooperstown.

The second quarter looked a lot like the first quarter as the Marauders scored the first basket of the period on Carly Driekan’s shot, but then went more than five minutes without points and six minutes without a field goal. Cooperstown went on a 10-0 run during that time, capped by four points by reserve Alannah Haggerty, who turned 17 on Tuesday. The halftime score was 26-13.

In the second half, New York Mills got its offense going, but that didn’t translate to stopping Cooperstown on defense. The teams traded baskets most of the period, and the lead was 16, 44-28 at the end of the third quarter.

Cring, Haggerty, Vann and Holli Erkson each had four points in the quarter for the Redskins.

In the fourth quarter, Cooperstown ran the lead up to 20 points, 51-31, on Sumer Murdoch’s free throws with 4:56 left in the game. The Marauders got the final tally down to 11, but never got within 10 points in the half, and their late rally was largely against the Redskins’ second team.

“Our defensive intensity isn’t quite as good with our bench players in the game,” Niles said. “That’s something we have to work on.”

In addition to Cring’s 12 points, Vann scored 10, Erkson nine, Murdoch and Haggerty eight and Bloomfield seven. Domenique Talerico led all scorers with 15 points for New York Mills (12-6).

Cooperstown (14-3, 8-1) hosts Waterville on Friday for their senior night and final regular season game. If the Redskins win, they will share the Center State Conference Division III title with Hamilton, which has finished its division schedule at 9-1. The two teams split during the regular season.

Niles said he expects his team to know about their Section Three Class C tournament seedings on Sunday.

“It depends on how many teams get in,and their records, but I think we will be a No. 2 or 3 seed and play a home game in the playoffs. I’m not sure if we will get a bye or not, that depends on how many teams there are,” he said.

Cooperstown’s JV girls also won, beating New York Mills 49-35, and are now 16-1 on the season.
