CV-S and MCS girls tie again

COOPERSTOWN — They have played 196 and a half minutes of soccer and there’s still no winner between Tri-Valley East rivals Cherry Valley-Springfield and Milford.

The two girls’ teams played a 2-2 tie on Tuesday in Milford, just eight days after a 1-1 tie in Cherry Valley.

The game on Tuesday was stopped because of darkness with 3:30 left on the clock in the second overtime.

“It is always a great game when Cherry Valley and Milford get together,” Wildcats coach Chris Saggese said. “These are two good teams.”

CV-S took the lead twice in the game only to see Milford tie it twice in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

The second tie came with 9:05 left on Addy Lawson’s shot from the right corner. Lawson’s cross bent toward the goal, hit the left post and bounced in.

“That’s why you play a cross like that,” Saggese said. “Addy made a beautiful shot and it curved just right.”

After a scoreless first half, CV-S took a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes gone in the second half. Lauren Loucks stole a ball and shot from the left corner. Milford goalie Monica Ridgeway knocked the ball down, but it bounced out to Jessica Carson who put it into the goal to the right of Ridgeway.

Francesca Green tied the game with 17:14 left in the second half on a corner kick. Green’s corner kick from the left side bounced off a defender and into the goal.

“Francesca has been working hard on her corners,” Saggese said. “It was a beautiful play.”

Loucks played a part in the next CV-S goal with another steal. This time she took the ball from midfield and dribbled in into the Milford box. The Wildcats knocked it over the endline setting up a CV-S corner kick.

Jordan Loucks took the kick from the left side. It bounced off several players before Zane Ashford kicked it into the goal for a 2-1 lead with 15:09 to play.

Although it didn’t hurt her on the field, Lauren Loucks played the game a day after the death of her grandfather. CV-S coach Amy Garretson said her team was affected by the death.

“We had a tragedy in our community last night,” Garretson said. “It was a tough game for our girls and it showed.”

Garretson said she was proud of Louck’s efforts.

“She played really well. I know she was determined to come out and play today, and she did a great job.

“She showed so much courage tonight,” Garretson said.

Milford had two good looks at the end of the second half. With 30 seconds left, CV-S goalie Kylie Graham beat a sliding Kaley Chase to a ball by little more than a foot. Just before the whistle, Green had a direct kick from outside the box on the right corner. The ball got knocked down by a wall of Patriots.

Neither team had a good look in either of the overtime periods. At the end of the game, CV-S had the ball in Milford’s end. The Wildcats knocked it over the end line, setting up a potential corner kick. When the referees couldn’t see the play in the darkness, they called the game instead.

Not only have the two teams tied twice, but they are nearly tied atop the T-V East standings. CV-S (9-2-2, 8-2-2) leads Milford (8-2-2, 7-2-2) by a half game. Schenevus is in third with three losses. CV-S hosts Worcester and Milford is at Richfield Springs tomorrow. The winner of the division will play Morris, which has already clinched the Tri-Valley West, in the cross-over game.
