Area girls win Gus Macker trophy

 A local team of 11-year-old girls captured the championship trophies for the 11- and 12-yearold division of the 17th Annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament July 6 to 8 in Norwich.

Sponsored by Cooperstown Optical, Ali Baker and Teagan Mackey of Oneonta, Mya Murdock of Hartwick, and Maggie Schuermann of Cooperstown, had a 5-0 appearance in the 15-team bracket.

The outdoor tournament raises money annually for the Norwich YMCA and other local nonprofit organizations.

Each year East Main Street in Norwich is transformed into the Gus Macker basketball courts for local and visiting competitors, replacing downtown traffic with 3-on-3 driveway games on lined back-to-back basketball courts that span a quarter mile down the street.

The 2012 tournament featured 427 teams on 31 courts in several divisions.

The Gus Macker Basketball Tournament has numerous divisions, designed so anyone can play, according to a media release. This maintains the purity and integrity of the driveway game.

Since 1987, the Macker tour has expanded, holding a total of 972 tournaments throughout the country with more than 2.2 million players — male and female — from 7 years old to those 50 and older, the release said , drawing more than 23 million spectators, according to the release.
