Free throw caps 46-45 victory over Hamilton

STAFF REPORT

Nicole Cring had a double-double and Holli Erkson hit a walkoff foul shot as host Cooperstown edged Hamilton, 46-45, in a Center State Conference Division III girls basketball game last Thursday. Alexis Bloomfield went 1-for-2 from the foul line with 30.2 seconds left to tie the score at 45 for the Redskins (8-1, 4-0), who stole Hamilton’s last possession with 7.5 seconds to go.

Cooperstown called a timeout with 3.5 seconds left and set up a play for Erkson, who was fouled at the buzzer on a shot from just inside the foul line. Erkson then ended the game by hitting the first free throw of a twoshot foul with no time left, capping a performance highlighted by 13 points and eight assists.

Cring contributed 10 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks.

“She’s having a great season,” Cooperstown coach Mike Niles said of Cring, a 5-foot-11 junior center who played point guard as a freshman. “She’s a game-changer. Other centers won’t shoot against her and she can rebound and lead the break.”

Sumer Murdock and Meghan Vann each had eight points, four steals and two three-pointers for the Redskins, who took a 15-12 lead into the second quarter. Hamilton (5-3, 3-1) pulled to 22-18 by halftime and entered the final quarter with a 36-33 lead.

“We got a big jump, but they put a little, easy press on us that messed up our rhythm,” Niles said of a Hamilton program that fell, 32-27, to South Kortright in a Class D state quarterfinal last season. Katie Weeks scored a game-high 15 points for the Emerald Knights, who were outscored, 13-9, in the fourth quarter.
