Grant's Field to open at Pathfinder Village Saturday

EDMESTON — Grant’s Field at Pathfinder Village, a new community soccer field, will officially open with a ribbon cutting and the first games of the Tri-Town Youth League’s 2012 season 8:40 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8., according to a media release from Pathfinder Village.

Youth soccer players, fans and families are cordially invited to attend.

Grant’s Field is named in honor of Pathfinder Village athlete Grant Stubbs, whose parents, Bob and Rosie, were instrumental in building the new facility. The Stubbs family has actively encouraged individuals living with disabilities to participate in sports, through their longtime involvement with the Adaptive Sports Program at Ski Windham and through the Wounded Warrior project.

“The Village is grateful to the Stubbs family for its tremendous generosity, and we envision Grant’s Field will create rewarding opportunities for our village residents and our local youth soccer players in so many ways,” said village Chief Executive Officer Paul Landers said in the release. “To our knowledge, there is no other special needs community in the nation that is creating opportunities like this for community integration. Pathfinder Village is once again at the forefront of innovation. Grant’s Field is the first phase of a larger plan to create naturally occurring opportunities for community integration on our 300-acre campus.”

“The Tri-Town Youth Commission is very excited to be partnering with Pathfinder Village to promote youth soccer in our community,” Tri-Town Youth Commission President Vicki Johnson said in the release. “We would like to thank the Stubbs family for their generous donation that allows our youth to have a top-notch soccer field. I think our players and fans will enjoy the new field and we are proud to be part of this ground breaking collaboration with Pathfinder Village.”

The Tri-Town Youth Commission has pledged $15,000 towards the new playing field and will oversee community usage of the field. Other local donors and business partners, including NYCM Insurance, have supported the new facility. The new field is immediately east of Pathfinder Village, visible from state Route 80, and parking is available on-site.

Over 400 young players and their families are expected to participate in soccer programs at the field this fall. Each week, members of Edmeston’s youth soccer teams will practice and play games on the new field. The Tri-Town Youth Commission will also host the annual Youth Festival at the new field on Sept. 29.

The field will have a concession stand, portable restrooms, and the village’s nearby bakery will be open to attendees. The Youth Commission’s “Snack Shack,” a 2011 Eagle Scout project for Mark Johnson of Edmeston, will be moved to the new field over the next few days. This will be operated in-part by village residents, selling items from the Pathfinder Village bakery.

Founded in 1980, Pathfinder Village is a planned, residential community for 80 children and adults who have Down syndrome and developmental disabilities. It also offers a day school program for students from area school districts and a summer camp program for young adults.
