Memorial golf tournament renamed

Beautiful weather and competitive golfers prevailed August 26, at the Lyn Edinger Memorial Golf Tournament at the Meadow Links Golf Course.

The annual tournament sponsored by Cooperstown Rotary Foundation was re-named this year in memory of Edinger, an active Rotarian and CRF board member.

Teams competed in a Captain and Crew format on the 18-hole course and, according to a media release from the foundation, the competition was fierce. The top two teams both scored 55 on the par 58 course, and the ultimate ranking was based on lowest score for the first nine holes. Team Trosset, consisting of Mike Trosset, Teddy Trosset, Don Raddatz and Scott Whiteman captured the prize and each received $50 in restaurant gift certificates. Second place team, Team Toscana, included Tony Pepja, Angelo Papja, Dan Spano, and Don Spano. They each won a free round of golf at Meadowlinks and memorabilia from the Cooperstown Hawkeyes. The third place team sponsored by NY Susquehanna & Western Railway, included Dennis Jakubowicz, Jake Maijala, and Jake’s parents. They each received a tin of cookies and a Rotary Cookbook.

The Most Honest Foursome, for the team with the highest score, was won by John Ramsey, Charlie Ellsworth, Matt Curtis and Kevin Royce. They received gift certificates. A special golf award was presented to golfer and Honorary Rotarian, Howard Talbot who played on the Martin Tillapaugh Team. The Closest to the Pin contest, with the coveted prize of a $100 gift certificate, was won by Jake Maijala, who landed 2 feet 6 inches from the pin on the 18th hole. In the Putting Contest, Frank Liberati took top honors, with Dan Spano placing second.

The Chair of the CRF, Ellen Tillapaugh, commented that the donors who contributed prizes, underwrote the reception and sponsored course holes and the putting tournament were all fundamental to the success of the tournament.

In honor of Lyn, the CRF will be donating proceeds from the tournament to the Michael Mayne Scholarship at Edmeston Central School. Lyn organized the foundation’s initial contribution to this scholarship in 2009, and in recognition of his leadership, CRF will continue to support the Scholarship in memory of Michael Mayne, a local soldier killed in Iraq.
