Cring strikes out 12, but C’town softball falls in 11

Cooperstown senior Nicole Cring was at her best Saturday, but Weedsport was just a little bit better.

Cring struck out 12 and walked three in an 11-inning two-hitter that ended with a walkoff single for the home team as second-seeded Weedsport topped No. 3 Cooperstown, 2-1, in a Section Three Class C-2 Softball Tournament semifinal.

“This was one of the best high school softball games I have ever been involved in,” said Cooperstown coach Dave Bliss, whose team also had two hits and went down on strikes 18 times against winning pitcher Abby Marsden. “It’s unfortunate that one team had to go home.”

Marsden struck out the side in the 10th and 11th innings, which each team started with a runner at second base via the international tiebreaker rule.

Marsden then stepped to the plate as the first Weedsport batter in the bottom of the 11th, with teammate Kaitlyn O’Connell stationed at second base.

After O’Connell stole third, Marsden drove a pitch to right field for the winning single as Cooperstown ended its season at 15-7.

“Both pitchers were very dominant and there were great defensive plays made by both teams,” Bliss said.

Weedsport catcher Libby Marsden, who drew all three of Cring’s walks, scored an unearned run in the second inning for the early lead.

The Redskins responded with an unearned run in the third, tying it when Holli Erkson tripled down the right-field line and later scored on a fielding error.
