CCS tennis clinches division

With a sweep of host Herkimer on Monday, Cooperstown tennis has clinched its division in the Center State Conference. The Redskins won 5-0, the second sweep of Herkimer this month, after a 5-0 win on May 4 in Cooperstown.

Cooperstown is now 8-1 and holds a two-game lead on second-place Mount Markham. The Redskin’s only division loss came against Clinton.  Sectionals will begin Mondayat Hamilton.

“The season is going great,” coach Dave Bertram said. Will Derouin is 11-1 and Issac Herman is 10-0 on the season. Bertram said he has moved the two into first doubles to give them a better chance at postseason honors.

“They played singles for the first part of the year and now are playing doubles together to try to get to the state tournament,” he said. “They just won the Center State Conference tournament this past weekend defeating Clinton and Westmoreland.” Paola Nunez has been playing third singles and she is also undefeated. She is 12-0 and won the CSC tournament this weekend, defeating Hamilton in the finals. Jimmy Anania and Hans Ofer have moved up to first and second singles. Anania is 4-2 and Ofer is 4-4.

Jay Davine and Benny Bauer are 10-2 at second doubles. They made it to the semi finals at the CSC tournament. Jason Cadwalader has playedsome doubles and singles and is 4-1 on the year.

On Monday, Anania beat Sean Gallagher, 6-2, 6-1. Ofer won over James Tangorra, 6-1, 6-0. Nunez shut out Sean Maphia, 6-0, 6-0. Herman and Derouin beat Brady Lawrence and Michael Ferrucci, 6-0, 6-1 and Davine and Bauer beat Spencer Hawes and Nick Kinney, 6-0, 6-1.
