Folts wins scholarship

Cooperstown senior Luke Folts attended the National Football Foundation scholar/athlete banquet at Turning Stone on Sunday night and was awarded a $500 Central New York Chapter Scholarship. Folts enjoyed a solid senior season for the Redskins after breaking his leg in both his sophomore and junior seasons. He led the team with three interceptions from his safety position and had a knack for being in the right place at the right time, according to head coach Steve Pugliese.

``He’s just an amazing person for what he’s gone through and continued to come back,’’ Pugliese said of Folts. ``The average person would never have been able to do it. But he’s got a lot of determination and he loves the game, so he kept coming back.’’

The scholarship is based on a combination of academics and athletics, Pugliese said.

``Luke is a great kid off the field too,’’ Pugliese said. ``He’s likeable and well-respected by his teammates. He’s a leader. I couldn’t picture anyone deserving this award more than Luke.’’

Folts helped Cooperstown to a perfect 6-0 regular season this past fall. They went on to win two sectional games before losing in the Section Three Class C semifinals.

Although he played mostly defense, Folts also caught a touchdown pass and occassionally saw some time at running back as well.

In addition to his three interceptions, he recovered two fumbles and made 33 total tackles during the season.
