Nicole Cring’s double, double helped Cooperstown make a decisive second-half run and beat visiting Mohawk 45-28 in a Center State Conference game on Monday. Cring had 12 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots as the

Redskins scored the first seven points of the second half, stretching a 17-14 lead to 24-14. “There wasn’t much to say.”

Cooperstown coach Mike Niles said of his halftime message to his team, “Slow down, stop turning the ball over. It was a pretty short speech. I had to leave the locker room because there was no need to yell. These girls know what they are doing.”

The Redskins jumped out to an early lead in the first half as well, leading 8-1 and holding the Mohicans without a field goal for the first 6:35 of the game. But Mohawk made a second-quarter run and tied the game 14-14 on a steal by Adrienne Ceneviva and layup by Nicole Landry with 2:08 left in the half.

That was the last Mohawk would score for more than six minutes. Free throws by Sumer Murdoch and Cring gave the Redskins a 17-14 halftime lead, and the duo would score the first two baskets of the second half run as well.

Cooperstown came out in the second half in a soft press and half-court zone defense that forced turnovers and kept the Mohawks from scoring inside. Foul trouble to Mohawk guards Ceneviva and Lexy Johnson also hurt the visitors in the second half.

Holli Erkson scored all eight of her points in a six-minute secondhalf span including the first six points of the fourth quarter, and Cooperstown closed out the game lengthening its lead.

The Redskins got all their scoring from their starting five. In addition to Cring’s 12 points, Alexis Bloomfield and Murdoch had nine points each, Erkson had eight and Meghan Vann had seven.

Johnson and Landry had six points each to lead Mohawk.

Cooperstown (12-2) improved to 7-0 in CSC Division III. The Redskins played at Hamiliton last night after deadline with a chance to clinch the division. When the teams met in Cooperstown on Jan. 5, Erkson hit a free throw with no time left to give the Redskins a 46-45 victory. It was Hamilton’s lone loss in the CSC.
