CHERRY VALLEY — There was much to celebrate at the 22nd annual Cherry Valley- Springfield athletic banquet held June 19 at the school.

Six varsity sports teams won Tri-Valley East titles this past school year, including the boys and girls soccer and track teams, and the boys basketball and baseball teams. The boys soccer, and boys and girls track teams each were overall Tri-Valley champions as well, and the boys’ track team was Section Four Class D champs for the fifth straight year.

One of the most memorable individual performances occurred during the winter, when senior Courtney VanBrink scored her 1,000th career point in the final game of her career. To add to the drama, VanBrink did not hit the milestone until late in the fourth quarter after picking up four fouls.

She finished her stellar career with 1,002 points, becoming just the second girls’ player in CV-S history to reach 1,000 points. In the spring, senior Brian Sutton also made school history, reaching the state meet for the second straight season. Sutton qualified for states in both the 400, his specialty, and the 100, and owns the school record in the 400.

The night was not without sadness, however, as two Memorial Awards were announced.

One was to Kyle Hysack, a 2008 CV-S graduate and track athlete who died suddenly this spring. The other given in honor of Rick Yerdon, who died last year and was a big CV-S sports booster. Yerdon’s son, Adam, who drowned in the Susquehanna River in August of 1998, also has an award named after him.

Before presenting team awards, each coach introduced their players and spoke about the accomplishments of each team.
