Redskins hit century mark

Sink 10 threes in 106-51 boys basketball victory

THE DAILY STAR

If at first you do succeed, try to do even better next time. Dave Bertram led the Cooperstown boys basketball team to its highest points total in his 10 years as head coach Tuesday, when the Redskins thumped visiting Morrisville- Eaton, 106-51, in a Center State Conference Division III game.

Michael Moakler scored a seasonhigh 23 points as Cooperstown eclipsed its Bertram-era record of 99 points, which it set with a 99-53 victory Dec. 21 at Morrisville-Eaton.

“We had a big game against them last time,” Bertram said. “The biggest thing was (Will) Thomas scored 36 on us last time, so we were treating this like a sectional game and we wanted to take the ball out of his hands.”

Cooperstown limited Thomas to 10  points in the first half, including twoin the second quarter, as the Redskins jumped to a 56-24 lead at halftime.

“We had a goal tonight, so we didn’t care what the score was or anything like that,” said Bertram, who got 12 points from Moakler in a 28-11 first quarter. “We wanted to do a good job on (Thomas) for future reference. They tried to push the ball at all costs, and that plays into our hands because we like to push it, too.” Thomas finished with 31 points for M-E (3-10), which received 10 points from Matt Roher.

“He’s a phenomenal player a Division I player and he’s only a junior,” Bertram said of 6-foot-3 guard Thomas. “He’s a shooter with a big frame who slashes to the basket. ... But everybody stepped up tonight.”

Moakler also hit one of a seasonhigh 10 three-pointers for Cooperstown (12-1, 8-0), which Bertram said was the most for the Redskins under his guidance. Harrison Clinton and Ethan Bliss each sank two threes for the Redskins, who received one apiece from Jay Davine, Michael Rowley, Ben Pierson, Sawyer Haney and Jeff Flynn.

Bliss finished with 14 points, Flynn contributed 13, Davine had 11 and Jeremiah Ford scored 10 for Cooperstown, which hosts Waterville tonight.
