Three Cooperstown wrestlers placed at the Central New York WrestlingTournament on Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill school, giving the Redskins confidence going into their final matches and the end of the season tournaments. Mikey Boyle (113) and Jacob Miller (138) each placed fourth, and Kevin Segit (195) placed sixth in the tournament. Cooperstown finished 14th overall.

With just one dual meet left, Coach Micaiah Abts said he is happy with his team’s efforts this season.

“I am excited about the progress we have shown. I am incredibly optimistic about the direction of the program; the old guys have done a fantastic job of continuing to build on the progress of those who came before them, and the young guys have shown the desire to work through the tough spots as they learn and improve,” Abts said.

On the season, Boyle is 20-6, Miller is 21-5 and Segit is 17-7. The three grapplers, along with senior William Murphy (182) and freshman heavyweight J.P. Gertz have the best chances of placing at the Section III tournament on Feb. 11. “Our ‘old guys’ (Murphy, Boyle, Miller, and Segit) have been tremendously unselfish,” Abts said.

“They have demonstrated great leadership, whether it be at a tournament, in the practice room, in film sessions or in the hallways at school.

“Our young guys have responded admirably to the many challenges they’ve faced. It’s easy to become dispirited when you’re inexperienced relative to your competition. I have been impressed with how well our freshmen and sophomores have bounced back from some tough losses. Win or lose, we are focused on improving,” he said.

The Redskins will host Dolgeville at 2 p.m. Saturday in a match of division leaders. It may be he team’s toughest dual-meet test of the season, as the Blue Devils are a wrestling powerhouse.

“They are quite good up and down the line-up, and any wins we get will be hard-earned,” Abts said. In the dual meet, Boyle will have a rematch against CNY tournament winner Ben Nastovski. Nastovski who won a decision over Boyle in the tournament semi-finals by three points. Abts said the match could have gone either way, and he is looking forward to Boyle getting a rematch.

Abts said another highlight of the season was the Oneonta Duals Tournament at OHS during winter break. The Redskins went 2-2 in the grueling dual-meet formats defeating Mount Markham and Oxford and osing to Oneonta and Onteora.

“The meet at Oneonta was phenomenal; several of our young guys got their first varsity wins, which was a huge boost for their confidence,” Abts said. “Additionally, Boyle, Miller and Segit went undefeated on the evening. Segit had a dominant victory over the fourth ranked 195-pounder in Section IV (Oneonta’s Khalil Derios).”

The Redskins were 6-8 in dual meets and 3-0 in Center State Conference Division II going into Tuesday’s rematch at Mount Markham.
