The Milford girls basketball
team won the turnover battle,
but little else as they lost a
64-43 decision at second seed
Davenport on Monday night in
a Section Four Class D quarterfinal
contest.
The Wildcats forced 30 Davenport
turnovers, but Milford head
coach Jim Weir said rebounding
was the big difference.
``We didn’t do a good job on
the baord and they killed us
from the foul line too,’’ Weir said.
Davenport hit 20-22 foul
shots while Milford made just
8-16. Davenport senior Sam
Meyerhoff, who surpassed the
2,000-point plateau in an opening
round victory, scored 21 first
half points before getting into
foul trouble early in the second
half.
Milford trailed by 20 at halftime,
but with Meyerhoff on the
bench cut that lead in half by
the end of the third quarter.
``We just dug ourselves too
big a hole,’’ Weir said. ``But we
battled.’’
Milford senior Chandler
Prouty scored 22 points and
grabbed 12 rebounds in the
final game of her steallar fiveyear
varsity career, which saw
her accumulate over 1,000
points and 1,000 rebounds. Fellow
senior Mariah Coville added
eight points.
The Wildcats advanced to
Monday’s game with a 48-36
victory over Downsville on Saturday
night in Milford.
Milford jumped out to an 8-0
lead to start the game, but Downsville
steadily chipped away, finally
taking their first lead of the game
at 22-21 on a putback by Jessica
Lacey.
The Eagles stretched the lead to
five, 26-21, before Milford sophomore
Krista Krol sparked a big run
for the home team.
Krol hit back-to-back three-point
shots and Prouty followed with an
old-fashioned three-point play as
the Wildcats went on an 11-2 run to
end the quarter with a 34-30 lead.
They kept the momentum going
in the fourth, scoring the first seven
points to take a comfortable 41-30
lead.
``Those shots were definitely
huge for us,’’ Weir said of Krol’s
three-pointers. ``We’ve been a
streaky offensive team all year and
you saw that tonight.’’
Krol finished with 10 points,
while Prouty had 13 points and 18
rebounds and Coville 14 points.
Both Prouty and Coville will be lost
to graduation, but Milford, 12-7
overall, will return starters Krol,
Avalon Ward and Anna Hiller.
``I think we’ll be very competitive
again next year,’’ Weir said. ``We
usually are.’’
