Hawkeyes rout Outlaws, 11-1

Cooperstown Hawkeye pitcher James Norwood threwa strong game against Oneonta Sunday at Doubleday Field and came away with his first win against the Outlaws.

The Manhattan native and soon-to-be sophomore from St. Louis University pitched seven strong innings and the Hawkeyes recorded their first win in the Mayor’s Cup series with Oneonta, dominating the Outlaws at Doubleday Field in an 11-1 victory.

“The other starts we just had one bad inning, or made a couple of errors and it all started tumbling down,” said Norwood, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Outlaws on June 8 before losing 4-1, and then had a rough first inning before settling down in a 6-2 loss to Oneonta on June 20. “It feelsgood to get the win. We don’t have too many games like these. I’ll take it.” Norwood (2-3) scattered seven hits in seven innings, giving up one run, walking one batter and striking out four.

“He pitched another great game,” Cooperstown head coach Eric Coleman said. “We finally got the offense behind him. It is nice to see, and nice to beat our big rival for the first time.”

Oneonta now leads the Mayor’s Cup 3-1, with seven more games left in the series, all in the next three weeks.

The next game is Monday at Doubleday Field at 5 p.m. The Outlaws lost their fourth straight game, and lost again Tuesday for a team record five straight losses.

Cooperstown chased Oneonta starting pitcher Brett Lisle (2-2) from the game after a six run third inning. The Hawkeyes sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, which began with them loading the bases in a most unusual way: with a dropped third strike and two balls that didn’t leave the infield.

Patrick Hyde led off the inning striking out. Oneonta catcher Lucas Leifield dropped the last pitch and then threw wide of the bag as Hyde hustled down to first. After Steven Kandborg ground out to the pitcher to advance Hyde, Matt Carr beat out an infield single to shortstop Cory Hunt. Ty Morris then hit another ball to Hunt, who tried for a 6-4-3 double play, only to have both runners called safe. Hyde took third to load the bases.

Jacob Hubert’s single scored Hyde. Tyler Mautner’s single scored Carr. Morris and Hubert scored on Chris Blanton’s single to right field.

After Josh Ingham struck out, Bradley Vanderglas singled to score Mautner, and then Blanton scored when Hyde reached on an error for the second time in the inning, this time on a fielding error by third baseman Zac Johnson.

The Hawkeyes got four runs in the fifth inning off reliever Matt Schmitt. With one out, Blanton hit a single to right field. He stole second and scored on Ingham’s single up the middle. Ingham took third on Vanderglas’s single to right field, and scored on a delayed double steal when Vanderglas stole second.

After Hyde struck out, Kandborg doubled to right field to score Vanderglas. Kandborg then scored when center fielder Omar Garcia dropped Carr’s fly ball to deep center to make it 10-0.

Oneonta got its lone run off Norwood in the top of the seventh. Hunt singled up the middle, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Clay Holcomb’s single to right field.

The Hawkeyes got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Hyde reached on an infield single, took second on a walk to Kandborg and scored on Carr’s single to left field.

Oneonta made four errors in the field and stranded nine runners including bases loaded in the fourth inning. First baseman Zander Weil reached base in all four of his at bats -- three singles and a walk only to be stranded at first base four times.

Hayden Elrod pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Norwood striking out two and giving up two hits.

Cooperstown is off today and plays at Albany tomorrow.

The next home game is Monday against the Outlaws.
