Fox has big night for Hartwick women

Cooperstown graduate Samantha Fox scored a varsity-high 14 points Friday to lead the Hartwick College women’s basketball team to a 59-49 victory over visiting St. John Fisher in the Empire 8 Conference.

Six-foot-3 senior center Fox came off the bench to shoot 6-for-11 from the floor, grab a team-best 10 rebounds and block three shots in 20 minutes. She had 12 points, six rebounds, two blocks and a steal after halftime, which Hartwick entered in a 30-24 hole.

The Cardinals (6-10, 2-3) extended their lead to 39-27 before Fox made her first appearance in the second half with 16 minutes, 26 seconds left. Fox then scored 10 points in less than six minutes, including a jump shot that gave the Hawks a 43-42 lead with 10:48 to go.

Fisher went ahead, 44-43, on a shot by Portia Velasco 13 seconds later, but a threepointer by Kate Veit with 10:17 left gave Hartwick (12-3, 4-1) the lead for good as the Hawks closed on a 16-5 run. Kate Purcell hit two of Hartwick’s six three-pointers en route to a game-high 17 points.

Camaryn Buckner had 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Cardinals, who received 13 points from Velasco.
