After a day of highs and lows, Cooperstown’s Aaron Idelson finished in the middle.

The sophomore diver scored a 285.15 and finished eighth out of 16 divers at the Frontier League Diving Championships in Carthage on Saturday.

“It was a long day, and after the meet I had a semiformal,” said Idelson, who admitted he was looking forward to the championships more than the dance.

“I did OK, but I think I could have done better.”

“It’s pretty tough competition in the Frontier League,” Cooperstown coach Cheryl Rock said. “It was Aaron’s first 11- dive meet, and it lasts a lot longer than he is used to ... about six hours with a two-hour warm up and four-hour meet.”

Idelson had previously qualified for the Section Three championships on Feb. 16 in Nottingham. He said his best dive of the day came on a reverse that netted sixes and sevens.

He said his biggest disappointment came on a back flip half twist that got just threes and fours.

“I was hitting it in practice,” Idelson said, “and I just didn’t hit it in competition.”

Idelson and his Redskins are in action again this weekend as the Frontier League holds the swimming part of their championships on Saturday in Watertown. After a slow start team wise, the young Redskins have won a couple of late dual meets and have qualified most of their top swimmers for sectionals on Feb. 17 in Nottingham.

“We have a couple more of our freshmen who are close,” Rock said. “They are so close. Hopefully they will get there this weekend.” Cooperstown has just four seniors this year, and all four of them began swimming this season. The  heart of their team will beback next year.

“We ended up with 17 swimmers.” Rock said, “We’ll lose four, but we have four coming up from club league. So we’re doing great.”

For Idelson, swimming this weekend will be “the easy part.”

“I think it is going to be a lot of fun,” he said. “I was definitely more worried about the diving.”
