Brothers compete in the pool

Sometimes things are not always as they seem. Just look at Cooperstown’s varsity swimming brothers Sean and Erik Mebust.

When 14-year-old Sean began having a break-out season as an eighth-grader  in his first year of varsity, itwould seem logical that he emulated the success of his big brother, 16-year-old Erik, the junior captain of the Redskins.

In fact, the oldest of the Mebust boys followed his brother into swimming. “When I was 5, going on 6, I joined the Sharks,” Sean said of the Clark Sports Center’s club swimming team. “He and our little brother, Ted, followed me.”

Sometimes, Erik doesn’t beat his little brother either.

“When I have to race  against Sean, that’s probably the hardest I work,” Erik said. “One time in a club race, we were in a qualifier for the 50, and there were so many kids racing, I didn’t know he was against me. He beat me!”

That race happened in club league, and the brothers don’t always overlap in their high school races. “Erik’s more of a sprinter, and I like the distance races,” Sean said. “But really, he is faster than me.”

“The thing we always say is, Erik is faster than me, but my times at this age are faster than Erik’s were. I’m faster than Ted, who will be up at varsity in two years, but his times at his age are faster than mine were,” Sean added.

Both Erik and Sean’s times have been excellent this season, winning races and leading relay teams. Erik has been at his best in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Sean has been the endurance swimmer, doing well at the 500s. Neither seems surprised that Sean has been able to make an impact right away.

“He works hard,” Erik said. “The thing is,” Sean added. “Club team season is harder than this. I did expect to do well. I didn’t know how well. I guess I have done pretty well.”
