Belgium to come to Cooperstown

According to organizers, at least 80 breweries from America and Belgium will meet at Brewery Ommegang for Belgium Comes to Cooperstown.

The annual beer-tasting festival will be held on August 4. The event will feature unlimited beer samplings of Belgian and Belgian-style beers. The first Ommegang Hop Chef Championship will take place at the Brewery where three top chefs compete for the title of Hop Chef.

Brewery Ommegang, founded by Don Feinberg in 1997, is the first farmstead brewery built in America in over a century.

Using European and American ingredients, Ommegang’s brewing techniques are thoroughly Belgian, with open fermentation and warm cellaring. Its flavorful beers are created by one of the best water aquifers in the Leatherstocking region. Feinberg sold the brewery in 2003 to a Belgian brewer, Duvel Moortgat.

Brewery Ommegang brews six award-winning Belgian-style ales year-round. Abbey Ale, its inaugural beer, has a licorice root while the brewery’s biggest seller, Hennepin, is known as the farmer’s beer. Three Philosophers holds the highest alcohol content at 9.8 percent. The ales Witte Wheat, Belgian Pale and Rare Vos Amber complete the brewery’s daily selection, creating unique choices for everyone’s taste. Tours and tastings are offered daily; a $3 souvenir glass is included with each tasting.
