There is family fun for everyone as the Cooperstown Lions Club hosts its fourth Annual Duck Derby Race, according to a media release from the club.
The action is from 10 a.m. t0 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30, at the Fly Creek Cider Mill. There is no admission fee.
The event centers on multiple rubber duck races down Fly Creek in front of the mill culminating in a final race with the winner taking home a $100 cash purse.
“The unique attraction of the Lions’ races is that you can watch the ducks from start to finish right in front of the mill and enter multiple races,” Rick Hulse, chair of event, said in the release.
Racing ducks are $1 each per race and races begin at the top of each hour starting at 11 a.m. Saturday and ending at 3 p.m. Sunday with the final grand-prize race.
Additional family-friendly activities planned are a gift basket raffles, games for children including inflatable bounce houses and refreshments.
Ducks may be purchased at the event before each race or in advance at New York Pizza on Chestnut Street in Cooperstown.
All event proceeds are reinvested back to the community to benefit a variety of community betterment projects. While the Lions Club’s main initiative is eyesight conservation, they have a demonstrated history of successful community betterment projects, the release stated.
The club will be accepting donations of used eyeglasses that are then recycled for distribution in under developed countries. Funds raised from the weekend are reinvested back into the community through the Lions Club Mini Grant Program. The Fly Creek Cider Mill will be pressing sweet cider Saturday and Sunday and visitors can witness the entire process.
The mill is located three miles north of Cooperstown, just off state Route 28.
