The Smithy-Pioneer Gallery is offering a series of free art-making nights every Wednesday through the month of February. Located at the heart of the village, the historic Smithy provides a place for the community to gather together and partake in some fun and easy art projects like small paper sculptures and ornaments, a variety of printmaking and more.

“This is the second year we are running the Community Art Night,” Smithy Executive Director Danielle Newell said. “It ran with great success, and this year we expect the same.”

On Feb. 1, the Smithy opened its doors to the community and the program was an instant hit, with more than 20 children and adults in attendance.

Those in attendance listened attentively and patiently while the community arts coordinator, Anna Mueser, explained what the project was going to be. An intricate paper ornament that resembled what some of the children were calling a tiny paper lantern made from two feet of wire, some glue and lots of strips of colorful tissue paper.

“Besides the art-making, there will be music and food, so it will be a regular party,” said Newell.

And she was right. In addition to the instruction and the chance to create some  works of art, the program gave the people in attendance a chance to enjoy one another and interact. By the  end of the first hour, mostof the artists in training had their projects completed and clipped to a string hanging to dry by the window. And as promised, all were treated to snacks and refreshments, and by hour two some were well on the way to completing another paper ornament.

Lindsey Hayes, attending with her two daughters, Madison and Lucy, expressed how much fun her daughters had and that she too enjoyed creating a small work of art. “It was a lot of fun, and I‘m sure we will do it again.” Hayes said.

Local artists and craftspeople will be assigned to each week where they will teach a particular craft. The Community Art Night is open to anyone, and if they have something to contribute, they are more than welcome to share, according to organizers.

“These Art Nights are really an opportunity for members of the community to collaborate and create something together,” Newell said, “as well as learn something new as individuals. It’s good to stretch yourself, especially in the winter months when the cold seeps in and it’s hard enough to move, let alone be creative.”

The remaining month’s schedule of projects are Wintergreen Oil Transfers on Feb. 15, Clay Tile Painting on Feb. 22 and Stamp Block Making on Feb. 29.

The Community Art Night is held in the Pottery Studio at the Smithy located at 55 Pioneer St. in Cooperstown every Wednesday night from 6-8 p.m. throughout the month.

Snacks, materials and music are provided free of charge.
