Cooperstown man charged in slashing attack

STAFF REPORT

A Cooperstown man was arrested last Friday after he allegedly attacked two neighbors with a box cutter in an early-morning dispute, according to a media release from the Cooperstown Police Department.

After an investigation by Cooperstown Police and the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, 25-year-old William Robert Werner of Maple Street was charged with two counts of assault in the first degree, both Class B felonies, and one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted, Werner faces up to 50 years in prison, the release said.

According to the release, multiple calls were made to Otsego County 911 shortly after 1:30 a.m. Friday regarding a neighbor dispute in progress on the outskirts of the village. Cooperstown police, Otsego County deputies and New York State Police responded to the scene.

Both victims, who were slashed multiple times in the face and body, and Werner were transported to Bassett Medical Center and Emergency Department by Cooperstown and Fly Creek emergency squads.

The two victims, both men, were treated then released in the morning, the release stated.

Werner’s condition was not available.

Werner was arraigned in Cooperstown Village Court before Acting Village Justice Gary Kuch and was sent to the Otsego County jail on $50,000 cash and $100,000 bond. A felony hearing scheduled for July 11 was waived, according to village Police Chief Mike Covert. Werner remains in jail.
