More residents ask for two-hour parking limit

By JIM AUSTIN

The Cooperstown Crier The expanding two-hour parking limit in residential areas of the village, aimed primarily at Bassett Medical Center employees, is poised to grow again.

Village trustee Lynne Mebust, the chairwoman of the Public Safety Committee, asked the board Monday night to schedule a public hearing for next month on creating two-hour parking zones on River Street from Main Street to Lake Street, Lake Street from River Street to Pioneer Street and on Fair Street from Main Street to Lake Street.

The change, Mebust said, was prompted by a petition signed by residents who live on those streets that was presented to her committee.

“They’re frustrated over no parking in front of their homes,” she said.

According to the minutes of the committee’s meeting, the petition was presented by Jim Howarth of 2 Lake Street. He told committee members the petition was signed by all the residents of the streets involved.

“At present the above mentioned streets are a parking lot for the employees at Bassett Hospital for whom parking has been made available by their employer,” the petition stated. All the available spaces are taken from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Mebust and village attorney Martin Tillapaugh will be looking into the possibility of the village issuing residential parking stickers, which requires an act of the state legislature.

In other business, the board:

• set a public hearing during next month’s meeting on changes in paid parking regulations for the coming season. Trustee Jeff Katz said the permit fee will increase to $50 for residents and $100 for non-residents and paid parking will not be in effect in the Doubleday Field lot until Memorial Day.
