Club seeks award nominees

The Cooperstown Rotary Club will be presenting the 2012 Christopher J. Warrell Community Service Award at their Annual Dinner on June 26, according to a media release from the Rotary Club. Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike are encouraged to submit nominations for this award, which honors the late Chris Warrell, who exemplified “Service Above Self,” according to a media release.

Chris and Lois Warrell retired to Cooperstown in 1989 and became active in the community. Chris joined Rotary in 1990 and was elected to the board of directors, becoming president in 1996-1997. In the community, he served as chairman of board of trustees for the United Methodist Church and oversaw capital improvements to the building. His most consuming passion was to Bassett Hospital where he served as president of the Friends of Bassett. His capable administrative abilities led to his being interim director at several area non-profits, including Glimmerglass Opera, Clark Sports Center and NYSHA, the release stated.

The award was first presented in 2001 to Lois Warrell.

Subsequent recipients were: 2002, Carol Waller; 2003, Dr. Theodore Peters, Jr.; 2004, Paul Raeder; 2005, James Atwell; 2006, Catherine Black; 2007, Jean Wycoff; 2008, Ellen Tillapaugh; 2009, Robert B.  Schlather; 2010, Ellen St. Johnand in 2011, Anne Geddes- Atwell.

The award is intended to honor an individual who has consistently exhibited “Service Above Self” in a volunteer capacity. The recipient may be a Rotarian or a non-Rotarian; the service should be volunteer in nature and not part of a paid position; the service should have occurred over  an extended (years) period oftime and benefited the community as a whole.
