Cooperstown Mayor Jeff Katz on Tuesday proclaimed Saturday, Aug. 4, as Sarah Groff Day in Cooperstown.
Groff, a triathlete, will compete on Saturday in the 2012 London Olympics. She and her teammate, Gwen Jorgensen, were the first American athletes to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. On Aug. 6, 2011, Sarah placed seventh in a World Championship Series triathalon in London, a designated World Qualification Event for the 2012 Olympics.
Groff’s third-place finish for the entire 2011 WCS series was the best showing by an American triathlete in the three-year history of the series.
Sarah’s parents Jerry and Jeannine were on their way to London on Tuesday and wrote in an email that her extended family and friends have been arriving in London the past few days. The 25-member “Team Groff“ will be complete when Sarah arrives. The team ranges in age from Sarah’s 18-month-old nephew to her 91-year-old great-grandfather.
“There is of course an official team T-shirt, and we wish we had enough for everyone in Cooperstown and at Bassett,” the Groff’s wrote.
Sarah is finishing her training taper in the Swiss Alps and was scheduled to arrive in London on Wednesday. She will be based near Hyde Park, which is the Triathlon venue. The athletes will swim in the Serpentine lake, cycle past Buckingham palace and run in the park.
“As far as we can tell through email, she is relaxed and eager to compete. We were able to share with her the many well wishes and congratulations from the Cooperstown and Bassett communities. The ‘Sarah Groff Day’ designation and the Olympic Poster sponsored by Bassett both made her misty eyed. Sarah has asked us to let you all know that she is touched and honored. She would normally prefer to do this herself, but right now her time is very limited. Please know however, that you are all part of Team Groff and Team USA!” they wrote.
She will compete in the Triathalon on Saturday. The event will be televised live from 4 to 6:15 a.m. on the NBC Sports Channel.
