The churches in the
Cooperstown Ecumenical
Council of Churches _
Christ Episcopal, Evangelical
Lutheran, First Baptist, Methodist,
Presbyterian, and St.
Mary’s Roman Catholic _ are
responding to the earthquake
devastation in Haiti in
a number of ways.
Monetary donations have
been sent directly through
missionaries, denominational
contacts, and through
Church World Service; totaling
over $22,400 so far.
Many of the churches also
support missionary doctors
and nurses and hospitals and
clinics which have already been
in place working with
the Haitian people.
In addition, churches
have made health kits and
sent other supplies. ``We
celebrate the additional
efforts of individuals and
groups within the community
who have contributed
through the Red Cross and
other relief agencies,’’ Rev.
Douglas Deer of the First
Baptist church. ``We are
thankful that we live in such
a caring, sharing community,
and we encourage each one
to continue their generous
support through our
churches and civic organizations.’’
