Sen. James Seward welcomed
students from the Cherry Valley-
Springfield Central School district
to Albany on Tuesday.
Students from the CV-S fifth
and sixth grade band, under the
direction of Michelle Schmitt,
performed in the concourse of
the Empire State Plaza as part of
“Music in our Schools” month.
“Performances like this one,
coordinated by the New York
State School Music Association
(NYSSMA), are a terrific showcase
for the talent that exists in
schools throughout the state,”
said Seward. “I enjoyed meeting
with the students from Cherry
Valley-Springfield and hearing
the results of their hard work.”
Choirs, orchestras and bands
from across the state travel to
Albany throughout the month of
March to take part in ``Music in
our Schools’’ festivities.
“Music education plays an
important role in developing a
well-rounded student. Problem
solving, creativity and critical
thinking are just a few of the skills
that are enhanced through music.
I have fought long and hard to
protect aid to our schools so
programs like music will continue
to receive much needed funding,”
concluded Seward.
