The students of the Ith
Education Center in Cooperstown
recently traveled
to Toronto, Canada to visit
the Roarockit Skateboard
Company and Oasis Skateboard
Factory as an extension
of their science, math,
and art curriculums.
According to a media release
from the Ith Education
Center, Simon Valetutto,
Zach Crippen, Ben
Gebl Mastroianni, Desi Gialanella,
and Luke Zenir,
Ith Education students,
learned firsthand how the
application of science and
math concepts directly relate
to skateboards, a personal
interest of the students.
The students constructed
a skateboard at Roarockit
Skateboard Company under
the tutelage of owners
Ted Hunter and Norah
Jackson. They also learned
about trends in design and
methods of constructing
unique deck molds.
The Oasis Skateboard
Factory is an alternative
school funded by the Toronto
public school system in
which every aspect of the
curriculum is entirely
skateboard-production
based. Students may apply
for participation in the program
in half or full year
blocks, and they receive full
credit in all academic areas.
According to the media
release, the Ith Education
Center students learned
more about the finishing
process of applying graphics
from the Oasis students.
The art of cutting stencils
is an important skill in
skateboard graphic design,
said Lisa Panzeri, director
of the Ith Education Center.
``It’s important to feel
out the students to find creative
ways to construct an
individualized, interestbased
curriculum for each
student’’ she said. ``You
can’t always hit the mark,
but those times that you do
make an enormous difference
in their personal and
academic growth.’’
According to Panzeri,
The Ith Education Center
focuses on experiential
learning opportunities that
engage the students on every
level.
Panzeri said the Ith students
will return from their
holiday break to a full-day
stenciling workshop with
Ursula Roma, a professional
graphic artist from Cincinatti,
Ohio. She said each
student will then build his
or her own longboard deck
from start to finish.
``The students can’t
wait,’’ she said. ``This project
has been a highlight of
their semester.’’
Panzeri said the students
will begin with a template,
but over the following
month, they will rely on
math, science, and woodworking
skills to construct
their own molds and templates
to create one-of-akind
decks.
The Ith Education Center
will offer a 15-hour
skateboard-building workshop
over the February
public school vacation. The
workshop will be open to
middle and high school students.
Participants will be
able to choose to build a
pintail longboard deck or a
traditional street deck. Information
is available on
the Ith Education Center’s
website, ithcenter.org.
