Democrat caucus is set

Staff Report

Richard Abbate, the Village of Cooperstown Democratic Committee Chairman, has set the date for the party’s caucus to select candidates for the annual March election.

This year, candidates for the office of mayor, a two-year term; two threeyear terms on the board of trustees and the village justice will be chosen.

Four-term mayor Carol Waller, a Republican, has decided not seek reelection. She said last month that she intended to support Deputy Mayor and Democrat Jeff Katz in his bid for the job.

The first term of Trustee Lynne Mebust, also a Democrat, is expiring and she plans to run for another three-year term on the board. Independent Trustee Eric Hage, whose term is also up, said last month that he has not yet decided if he will run again.

Voters will also decide on a village justice in the March election. The position is currently held by Enid Hinkes, who is completing her second four-year term.

Hinkes said last week she does not intend to run in March for a third term.

``I’ve decided to move on to other things,’’ she said.

Abatte said anyone interested in running on the Democratic ticket may contact him at 547-8716.

``It’s going to be an exciting year,’’ he said.

The caucus will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. in the village meeting room.
